The Master of Education Programme is intended for educators and those in education related professions. It has the potential to benefit a range of professions, such as practising or prospective teachers, school management personnel, social workers, and those who have an interest in the field of, and specialised areas in, education.

With a flexible programme design, students are allowed to choose one concentration area while they can also take courses offered by other concentrations. The Programme also offers a choice of dissertation/ independent project or coursework only for the fulfilment of graduation requirements.

Class sizes are small, with ample opportunities for in-class discussion and interaction.
-
English language is used in the part time Programme. The choice of medium of instruction depends on the nature of individual courses.

English language is used in the full time Programme.

** Assuming the student already holds a Postgraducate Diploma in Education or a Bac. of Education Students who successfully complete the six designated courses of the concentration will meet the requirements for subject knowledge for English teachers in schools as stipulated by the Education Bureau (EDB). In addition, this qualification in conjunction with a PgDE (or equivalent), where English is the specialised subject, will meet the EDB's requirements for language proficiency for English teachers.
PROGRAMME DELIVERY
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

complete a total of 27 units;
-
satisfy the requirements of the dissertation or its equivalent within the specified duration of the programme;
-
obtain Grade C- or above in all courses; and
-
achieve a cumulative GPA of 2.50 or above.

Applicants seeking admission to the Master of Education Programme should posses:
-
a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university or equivalent; and
-
a postgraduate certificate/diploma in education or equivalent, and/or relevant professional experience working with children and adolescent

Demonstrated language proficiency in Chinese and English as recognised by the Department.
Applicants may be required to attend an interview as part of the selection process. Successful selection will be based on the candidate’s communicative skills, language proficiency, maturity and motivation related to the programme of study.

Child and Adolescent Development Concentration
The objectives of the concentration are to enable students to:
-
advance an in-depth understanding of the education of children and adolescents from a whole-person developmental perspective;
-
promote critical awareness of and creative response to issues regarding the development of children and adolescents;
-
cultivate interest in fostering the all-round development of children and adolescents; and
-
facilitate initiatives taken for the development of children and adolescents.
Special Features of the Child and Adolescent Concentration
-
The Concentration provides advanced studies of human development from psychological and sociocultural perspectives and addresses core developmental issues.
-
It is designed for primary and secondary school teachers, early childhood educators, social workers, youth workers, and other professionals who are interested in fostering the all-round development of children and adolescents.

A diversity of courses are offered, including Child and Adolescent Development, Socio-cultural Context of Human Development, Psychology of Moral Development, Problem Behaviours in Children and Adolescents, Moral Education, Education for the Gifted and Talented, and Student Guidance and Counselling.

The content of the Concentration is helpful for professionals working in the areas of school guidance and counseling, moral and civic education, and student development. It is also compatible with the “Self and Personal Development” area of study in the Liberal Studies curriculum of the New Senior Secondary Curriculum.

- 課程內容針對兒童及青少年心理及群性成長的需要和適應而設計,從心理學、社會學、及教育學等多元觀點探討有關的核心課題

English Language for Teaching Concentration
The objectives of the concentration are to enable students to:
-
develop an in-depth understanding of the subject knowledge required for English language teaching;
-
enhance their critical awareness of how English subject knowledge can be applied to language teaching; and
-
reflect on pertinent theories and issues pertaining to English language subject knowledge and their implications for English language teaching and learning in Hong Kong.
Special Features of the English Language for Teaching Concentration
-
It addresses core issues in English language subject knowledge relevant to English language teaching, such as Grammar for Teaching, Psycholinguistics and Sociolinguistics in English Language Teaching, Literature and Language Arts, Phonetics and Phonology, Lexis, Morphology and Semantics, and Written and Spoken Discourse.

This concentration specializes in providing deeper knowledge about teaching the English language but it does not provide a teaching qualification, this is obtained through the processes of a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE).

Students who successfully complete the Programme will meet the requirements for subject knowledge for English teachers in schools as stipulated by the Education Bureau (EDB). In addition, this qualification in conjunction with a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (or equivalent), with English as specialising subject, will meet the EDB’s requirements for language proficiency for English teachers.

Students are eligible to apply for the Professional Development Incentive Grant offered by the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR).

Liberal Studies Concentration
The objectives of the Liberal Studies Concentration are:
-
to broaden the horizons and knowledge of teachers in teaching the subject;
-
to advance teachers' understanding of themselves, Hong Kong society, China and the World from multiple perspectives;
-
to promote critical awareness and creative response on perennial and contemporary issues in different contexts, such as cultural, social, economic and political contexts; and
-
to develop greater appreciation and respect for different values in a pluralistic society and ability to handle values conflict.
Special Features of the Liberal Studies Concentration

This concentration is specifically tailored according to the diverse fields of the Liberal Studies, and it examines the core issues through multiple lens, such as individual, societal, cultural, environmental, and technological lens.

The courses offered are useful for teachers to teach the subject knowledge and to adjust to the new senior secondary curriculum for Liberal studies.
-
The content of the courses emphases both theoretical and knowledge foundation, and the application of the theories in the real world.

The concentration focuses on the promotion of critical thinking skills and analytic views on issues, with an emphasis on the problem-solving research approach.
