Master of Education
This is a taught postgraduate programme leading to the award of the degree of Master of Education (MEd). The Programme is designed for local and international educators and professionals who have an interest in the field of, and specialised areas in, education.
 
 

AIMS

 

  1. to strengthen knowledge of and skills in education;
  2. to enhance analytical and critical understanding of issues in education from different perspectives;
  3. to develop a reflective, multi-disciplinary approach to education;
  4. to facilitate initiatives and promote leadership in education; and
  5. to foster competence in research in education.

Special Features of the Master of Education Programme
  • The Master of Education Programme is intended for educators and those in education related professions. It has the potential to benefit a range of professions, such as practising or prospective teachers, school management personnel, social workers, and those who have an interest in the field of, and specialised areas in, education.
  • With a flexible programme design, students are allowed to choose one concentration area while they can also take courses offered by other concentrations. The Programme also offers a choice of dissertation/ independent project or coursework only for the fulfilment of graduation requirements.
  • Class sizes are small, with ample opportunities for in-class discussion and interaction.
  • English language is used in the part time Programme. The choice of medium of instruction depends on the nature of individual courses.
  • English language is used in the full time Programme.
 
 

STRUCTURE

 
There are SIX concentrations available in the Programme. Upon entry into the Programme, each student must select one specific concentration and take all core courses in that concentration together with the common core courses and elective courses. The Programme is comprised of 27 units in total with the distribution stipulated as follows:

** Assuming the student already holds a Postgraducate Diploma in Education or a Bac. of Education Students who successfully complete the six designated courses of the concentration will meet the requirements for subject knowledge for English teachers in schools as stipulated by the Education Bureau (EDB). In addition, this qualification in conjunction with a PGDE (or equivalent), where  English is the   specialised  subject, will meet the EDB's requirements for language proficiency for English teachers.

PROGRAMME DELIVERY

Most courses are taught by a combination of lecture-discussion and seminars. During the course of study (second year for part-time programme), students complete a dissertation under the guidance of their supervisors. In lieu of the dissertation, students are allowed to undertake an Independent Project and an additional elective course, or two additional elective courses.
 
Students are required to attend either day and evening (full-time), evening (part-time) classes on weekdays and saturday morning / afternoon. A student may take no more than three courses in a semester.
 
Normally, students should complete the Programme in two calendar years (part-time) and one calender year (full-time). An alternative modular mode may be available for part-time students who would like to take a more flexible schedule of study and credit load. Please contact the Department of Education Studies for details. With special permission, a part-time student may extend his or her study but in no cases would the period of study be allowed to exceed three calendar years.
 
 

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

To be eligible for the award of a Master of Education degree, students must:
 
  1. complete a total of 27 units;
  2. satisfy the requirements of the dissertation or its equivalent within the specified duration of the programme;
  3. obtain Grade C- or above in all courses; and
  4. achieve a cumulative GPA of 2.50 or above.

Applicants seeking admission to the Master of Education Programme should possess: 


  1. a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university or equivalent; and

  2. a postgraduate certificate/diploma in education or equivalent, and/or relevant professional experience working with children and adolescent

  3. Demonstrated language proficiency in Chinese and English as recognised by the Department.

  4. You are highly recommended to provide your IELTS report as a proof of your English proficiency.


Applicants may be required to attend an interview as part of the selection process. Successful selection will be based on the candidate’s communicative skills, language proficiency, maturity and motivation related to the programme of study.

Child and Adolescent Development Concentration

This concentration is intended for school teachers and related professionals working with children and adolescents. It aims at advancing the understanding of social and psychological development of children and adolescents through analytical frameworks and research. It also addresses core issues relevant to education that emerge in the developmental process.

 

The objectives of the concentration are to enable students to:

  1. advance an in-depth understanding of the education of children and adolescents from a whole-person developmental perspective;
  2. promote critical awareness of and creative response to issues regarding the development of children and adolescents;
  3. cultivate interest in fostering the all-round development of children and adolescents; and
  4. facilitate initiatives taken for the development of children and adolescents.

Special Features of the Child and Adolescent Concentration

  • The Concentration provides advanced studies of human development from psychological and sociocultural perspectives and addresses core developmental issues.
  • It is designed for primary and secondary school teachers, early childhood educators, social workers, youth workers, and other professionals who are interested in fostering the all-round development of children and adolescents.
  • A diversity of courses are offered, including Child and Adolescent Development, Socio-cultural Context of Human Development, Psychology of Moral Development, Problem Behaviours in Children and Adolescents, Moral Education, Education for the Gifted and Talented, and Student Guidance and Counselling.
  • The content of the Concentration is helpful for professionals working in the areas of school guidance and counseling, moral and civic education, and student development. It is also compatible with the “Self and Personal Development” area of study in the Liberal Studies curriculum of the New Senior Secondary Curriculum.

English Language for Teaching Concentration

This concentration is intended for practising/prospective teachers and related professionals who want to acquire the subject knowledge required of a qualified professional English language teacher in local primary and secondary schools. It addresses core issues in English language subject knowledge relevant to English language teaching, such as knowledge of the sound, structural and meaning systems of English and the use of English in context.

 

The objectives of the concentration are to enable students to:

  1. develop an in-depth understanding of the subject knowledge required for English language teaching;
  2. enhance their critical awareness of how English subject knowledge can be applied to language teaching; and
  3. reflect on pertinent theories and issues pertaining to English language subject knowledge and their implications for English language teaching and learning in Hong Kong.

 

Special Features of the English Language for Teaching Concentration

  • It addresses core issues in English language subject knowledge relevant to English language teaching, such as Grammar for Teaching, Psycholinguistics and Sociolinguistics in English Language Teaching, Literature and Language Arts, Phonetics and Phonology, Lexis, Morphology and Semantics, and Written and Spoken Discourse.
     
  •  This concentration specializes in providing deeper knowledge about teaching the English language but it does not provide a teaching qualification, this is obtained through the processes of a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE).
  • Students who successfully complete the Programme will meet the requirements for subject knowledge for English teachers in schools as stipulated by the Education Bureau (EDB). In addition, this qualification in conjunction with a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (or equivalent), with English as specialising subject, will meet the EDB’s requirements for language proficiency for English teachers.
  • Students are eligible to apply for the Professional Development Incentive Grant offered by the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR).

School Leadership and Management Concentration

This concentration is intended for serving principals, aspiring principals, school teachers and education practitioners who want to acquire knowledge and skills necessary for school leadership and management. In addition to the general aim common to the existing MEd Programme, this concentration aims to enrich programme participants' knowledge and skills in the six core leadership areas of school principals, namely, strategic direction and policy environment; learning, teaching and curriculum; teacher professional growth and development; staff and resources management; quality assurance and accountability; and external communications and connection to the outside world. Although this concentration has an emphasis on nurturing leaders of secondary schools, a very large portion of the content is also suitable for that of primary schools, early childhood education and post-secondary institutions.

 

The objectives of the concentration are to enable students to:

  1. critically and contextually analyse and reflect on issues related to the six core leadership areas for school administrators;
  2. demonstrate integrated learning that enhances professionalism and leadership in education; and
  3. conduct action research to effect change within schools.

Liberal Studies Concentration

The concentration is intended for school teachers and professionals who are teaching Liberal Studies or related subjects in secondary or primary schools in Hong Kong. It provides advanced studies and subject knowledge in Liberal Studies from multi-disciplinary perspectives and addresses core issues in the subject.

 

The objectives of the Liberal Studies Concentration are:

  1. to broaden the horizons and knowledge of teachers in teaching the subject;
  2. to advance teachers' understanding of themselves, Hong Kong society, China and the World from multiple perspectives;
  3. to promote critical awareness and creative response on perennial and contemporary issues in different contexts, such as cultural, social, economic and political contexts; and
  4. to develop greater appreciation and respect for different values in a pluralistic society and ability to handle values conflict.

Special Features of the Liberal Studies Concentration

  • This concentration is specifically tailored according to the diverse fields of the Liberal Studies, and it examines the core issues through multiple lens, such as individual, societal, cultural, environmental, and technological lens.
  • The courses offered are useful for teachers to teach the subject knowledge and to adjust to the new senior secondary curriculum for Liberal studies.
  • The content of the courses emphases both theoretical and knowledge foundation, and the application of the theories in the real world.
  • The concentration focuses on the promotion of critical thinking skills and analytic views on issues, with an emphasis on the problem-solving research approach.

Teaching Mathematics at Junior Levels (P1 to S3) Concentration

This Concentration is intended for school mathematics teachers at junior levels (P1 to S3) and cognate professionals. It caters for the changing needs of the professional community by advancing teachers’ critical awareness and understanding of the major contemporary pedagogical and curriculum issues, as well as historical and socio-cultural influences on curriculum and professional development in Hong Kong. It also provides advanced studies of subject knowledge in Mathematics.

 

The objectives of this Concentration are:

  1. to develop greater awareness and appreciation of the importance of theory-driven and research-based mathematics teaching and assessment practices, and critical understanding of their implications for curriculum development;
